Small amounts of plain milk only

A few tablespoons of plain milk, now and then, are fine for most dogs — but many adult dogs are lactose intolerant, so even a small amount can bring on loose motions, gas or vomiting12. Milk tea is a different question: the caffeine in tea, not the milk, makes it unsafe for a dog in any amount3.

If your dog has loose motions after milk

Stop giving milk and offer fresh water. A mild upset from milk usually settles on its own within a day .

How much
A few tablespoons, occasionally — not a cup, not daily2
Why limited
Most adult dogs can't fully digest milk sugar (lactose)12
Chai / milk tea
Never — the tea's caffeine is unsafe for dogs, whatever the milk-to-tea ratio3
If too much
Loose motions or an upset stomach that should settle in a day12

Why milk can upset a dog's stomach

Dairy is one of the most common sources of food intolerance in dogs: most adult dogs make less of the enzyme that breaks down lactose (milk sugar) than they did as puppies1. That mismatch is what causes the loose motions, gas or vomiting some dogs get after milk — it's an intolerance, not a poisoning, and it varies a lot from dog to dog12.

Milk is also fairly high in fat and natural sugar, so a regular habit of bowls of milk, rather than occasional spoonfuls, can add to a dog's calories and has been linked with stomach upset and pancreatitis in dogs who get a lot of fatty extras2.

How much milk, and how often

A few tablespoons of plain cow's or goat's milk, as an occasional reward, is what vets describe as reasonable for a dog that tolerates it2. None of our sources describe a health benefit to giving a dog milk regularly — "dog ko doodh pilane ke fayde" is really a question of whether your own dog tolerates it, not a nutrient your dog is short of; a complete dog food already covers that2.

If you haven't given your dog milk before, start with a small amount and see how he reacts before making it a habit12.

What about chai, or milk-roti?

Milk tea is not a smaller version of the milk question — it's a caffeine question. Tea contains caffeine, which affects a dog's heart rate and nervous system and is not considered safe for dogs at all, regardless of how much milk it's mixed with3. Don't share your chai, even a little.

Milk-roti (roti soaked in plain milk, no tea) follows the same small-amounts rule as milk on its own — see can dogs eat roti for how much roti itself is safe.
