Diwali calm kit for pets: a firecracker night checklist
Most of what helps on Diwali night is set up before it: an ID tag that's actually on the collar, a safe room your pet already knows, and a walk timed before the crackers start 123. On the night, keep pets indoors with the windows shut and some calm sound playing, and never leave one tied up outside 123. Diwali's main day (Lakshmi Puja) falls on Sunday, 8 November in 2026 8.
- Diwali night, 2026
- Main day (Lakshmi Puja) is Sunday, 8 November8
Before Diwali
- Put an ID tag with your phone number on the collar, and check your pet's microchip details are current. A scared pet can bolt, even from home 12.
- Set up a safe room or den a few weeks before, not on the night itself, so your pet already knows it: behind the sofa, under a table, a covered crate, or a cupboard with blankets 23.
- Walk your dog while it's still light, well before dark and before the crackers start 12.
- If your pet panics badly most years, ask your vet ahead of time. Some vets can plan for this with you, but it takes time to arrange — don't leave it to the night itself 23.
On the night
- Bring pets indoors well before dark 13.
- Close the windows, curtains and any cat flap, and leave a light on to hide the flashes 23.
- Let your pet use its safe room. Don't pull a cat out if it's hiding — let it come out on its own 3.
- Play some music or the TV, loud enough to help cover the bangs 123.
- Stay calm yourself, and comfort a pet that comes to you for it, but don't force it if it wants to be alone 12.
- Cats: keep a litter tray near the safe room 3.
Never
- Never tie a pet up outside on Diwali night. The RSPCA says it plainly: don't tie your dog up outside 1.
- Never take a pet to watch crackers, or burst crackers near one 1.
- Never punish a scared pet — it only frightens it more 123.
- Never give any medicine that your own vet hasn't prescribed for this 3.
- Tying a cracker to an animal, or using one to scare it, is cruelty under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 — AWBI has written to the public about this 5.
If your pet runs away
- Search your home first — small, dark spaces, behind heavy furniture, under beds 4.
- Then search the neighbourhood with a recent photo, and ask neighbours and your watchman 4.
- Call nearby vet clinics, shelters and animal control; many lost pets are handed in there 4.
- Once your pet is back, make sure the collar's ID tag has your current phone number and the microchip details are up to date 4.
Street dogs
- The advice above is written for pets, but street dogs get just as scared by loud, sudden bangs, with no safe room to retreat to 12.
- Tying a cracker to any animal, including a street dog, or bursting one next to it, is the same offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 5.
- If street dogs rest in your lane, keeping crackers away from where they sleep, and leaving water out, costs nothing.
When to call a vet
Checked against vet sources. Not yet reviewed by a vet.
- A burn from a cracker, even one that looks small. Fur can hide how bad it is 6.
- Your pet ate a cracker, or sweets with chocolate or raisins such as kheer, laddoo or mithai 67. Not sure about a food? See the Indian food chart for dogs.
- Trouble breathing, or collapse 6.
- Your pet ran off and was hit by something, or seems hurt once it's back. Some injuries take a day or two to show 6.
- Call before you set off, so the clinic can get ready for you 6. See 24-hour vets open on Diwali night, by city.

Official sources disagree or leave gaps on these. Confirm before you rely on them.
- RSPCA and PDSA write for UK pets and fireworks generally; we found no AWBI or Indian veterinary guideline that sets out the same before/during/after steps specifically for Diwali, so this page applies their general fireworks advice to Diwali night 123.
- We found no official source giving dedicated advice for street dogs on Diwali night; the "Street dogs" section applies the same noise-fear principle used for pets, plus AWBI's cruelty rule 125.
